EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR)

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a natural process to assist in desensitizing traumatic and/or stressful memories, events that are preventing you from moving on with a healthy life. This is proven highly effective with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and desensitizing old disturbing memories while relinking positive cognitions to heal.

EMDR is a tool used to desensitize trauma, negative emotional events so recovery can occur. Initially, EMDR appears to approach psychological issues in an unusual way compared to traditional psychotherapy. It does not rely on talk therapy or medications.

Instead, EMDR uses a patient’s own rapid, rhythmic eye movements. These rapid eye movements desensitize the power of emotionally charged memories of past traumatic events.

What Can You Expect from EMDR?

An EMDR treatment session generally lasts from 60 – 90 minutes. I will move my fingers back and forth in front of your face and ask you to follow these hand motions with your eyes.

At the same time, I will have you recall a disturbing event. This will include the emotions and body sensations that go along with it. The goal is to reduce the disturbing event to a level that is acceptable. We will then link a positive cognition in terms of how you would rather feel now, as the memory of the negative cognition fades.

If someone has more than one traumatic issue or event, the process may be repeated in a subsequent session for that different situation. The results tend to be quite effective.

While a trauma never goes away 100%, it can be desensitized enough for you to begin to let go of past pain and move forward.
