COUPLES THERAPY

Your task is not to seek love but to find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against love.”
~ RUMI

Couple-ship comes with many challenges and joys.

Is this a simple argument? Or is this a pattern that has developed over a few years?

Any relationship requires that both partners treat it with respect and care. If one of the partners decides they can step outside the fundamental definition of relationship, then challenging circumstances can develop.

Joni’s story…

Joni sought counseling when she found out her spouse was cheating on her. Joni was suspicious, and her worst nightmare was confirmed when she found evidence through texts and e-mails.

Joni confronted her husband; he lied and denied he was having an affair. She begged her husband to go to couples’ therapy. He said he would but dragged his feet and continued to see the other woman while he was lying about it.

Joni filed for divorce six months later.

Joni was devastated, and she experienced enormous pain and grief. There were legal decisions, court dates, functioning at work. While her children were grown, they were hugely affected by their parents’ split.

In counseling, Joni needed someone whom she could trust, as there was a breach of trust in her marriage. She sought empathy, compassion, coping techniques to help her through her grief and loss.

As Joni’s therapist, I provided the guidance she sought to embrace her challenges, needs, hopes as she navigated her way through the healing process.

One year later, Joni is divorced and is on the road to recovery and acceptance that her life is forever changed, however, for the better. She is active in her community, has made new friendships and attends a support group for women in transition.

This doesn’t have to be YOUR story

I have counseled many individuals, men and women, who were at the depths of betrayal and helped them rise to resilience.

Using objectivity, I find couples can be assisted to take ownership of behaviors and accept responsibility for their actions, both requisites for growth to occur.
