Q: I want to become more creative this year, yet when I think about it, I don’t know how. Do you have any suggestions?

A: All of us are creative although we don’t always feel that way. Creativity involves a neural network called the anterior superior temporal gyrus which works in conjunction with the right hemisphere of the brain to generate creative insight. Creativity can begin with allowing yourself to quiet the mind and practice present moment awareness. Einstein said “Creativity is the residue of time wasted,” which meant that it takes a routine dose of free time for the brain to facilitate the kind of creative insight that leads or breakthroughs in thinking.

The right hemisphere is the intuitive, conceptual, holistic, imaginative aspect of the whole brain. We all have a right and left hemisphere of the brain, each carrying special gifts. Journaling first thing in the morning and allowing yourself to write what comes through you before your left analytical brain turns on is a good way to be creative. You also may want to take lessons with a musical instrument or an art class. Take a walk in nature and use all of your senses to experience natures creative juices. You can invite moments of insight for creativity by being in nature. Remembering your dreams can be a creative tool in exploring the power of your subconscious mind. Dreams can provide information to help you solve conscious problems. This is using your creativity. Keep a dream journal and write down your dreams or fragments of their symbolism.

Some other ways to jump start your creative right brain are:

  1. Take a walk especially in nature
  2. Laugh as much as you can
  3. Squeeze a ball in your left hand and activate your right brain
  4. Take a trip to a new place to activate and stimulate your brain
  5. Make space to let your imagination wonder and it’s amazing what may show up

You have more creativity than you realize. These tips can get you started and you will be creating what you want when you want it. And remember to meditate.
