Q: Is there is a difference between the subconscious and unconscious mind?

A: Though used interchangeably, there are subtle differences between the conscious and subconscious. The subconscious includes hidden memories, desires, and drives. The unconscious refers more to sleeping, passed out or even drugged: the subconscious does not.  When you are in a subconscious state, you are not sleeping.

In my hypnosis practice, I use the word accessing the subconscious. Hypnosis is simply a relaxed focused concentration. Think of it when you are driving from point A to point B and you suddenly ask yourself, how did I get here? This happens all the time. You are aware, yet your subconscious is at the helm. According to science, our subconscious operates 95% of the time.

Dr. Milton Erickson who founded the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH), was paralyzed by polio at age 17. While recovering and mute, he activated his subconscious brain to slowly teach himself how to walk and talk again.

By opening and accessing the subconscious, it is possible to have transformational experiences that can be positively life-changing.
