Q: I just moved from a small town to the city and I am searching for a job in my career field. I am getting anxious letting fear and doubt creep in. What would you suggest?
A: Moving is in itself a big stressor. Give yourself credit for having the courage to make this brave move. I hope that you have found a place to live that you like and feel good about. Next, as you settle in, make a list of what you want to do each day by exploring job opportunities. Perhaps you can get your portfolio resume sent to some companies you have an interest in working for. Become familiar with your surroundings and find out if there are some organizations you can join to begin to meet new people. Perhaps you can find something to become a part of that is related to your career field.
If you have a friend or acquaintances in the city, contact them and make arrangements to connect. It’s important to get connected with people and organizations with whom you feel a connection with. For instance, if you like working out at a fitness center, explore a few and get a feel for one that suits you and if they have the classes you are interested in.
There is also a lot of power in putting the pen to the paper and writing down what you want to create. Be specific with the job setting and other things you are seeking to do in your new location. This can help you overcome your fear and doubt in addition to building your self-esteem. Open up to all of the possibilities in store for you and be patient.
Set a goal of when you would like to begin the new job and take the action steps to get there. Take each day and be in the present. This will keep your anxiety at bay.
Be realistic with your expectations and you will be on your way to achieving your goals.
