Q: Sometimes I am so busy that I get totally distracted and don’t pay attention. Can you offer some tips to get more centered?
A: We are a culture of multi-tasking and taking on too much. We all do it. I would challenge you to watch yourself for the remainder of today and tomorrow. Notice how often you are focusing on several activities rather than just centering on one in this moment. Maybe you are driving to work, listening to the radio, thinking about the project deadline, the dinner you have to attend tonight, and the gifts you need to purchase for your spouses birthday. You are everywhere but right here, right now. You miss the drive, you miss the music, you miss getting deep insights into now.
Begin each day with a few minutes of centering and getting in the moment of now. Sometimes it takes courage to just be open to whatever the moment reveals to you. But think about the alternative; avoidance, denial, a life spent running from yourself. Allow yourself to listen to what your heart is telling you as it can be very revealing. When you are distracted, try and bring yourself back to center, to yourself, to what is. You will be amazed at what this can do for lessening your distractions and being present.
