Q: What is the best way I can remember my dreams?

A: Remembering your dreams is a part of remembering your whole self, your essence and hopefully embracing it. Dreams are fascinating and a real journey into one’s subconscious mind. Recovering what happens during REM sleep lets you use what you’ve learned there to improve your emotional life. The memories that surface can be amazing. There is so much symbolism in dreams. You have the ability to remember things about your childhood, your past, present, and even your future. Here’s the mind tickler: Have you ever awakened at night from a dream that you were sure you would recall, only to find you completely lost memory of it in the morning? Why does this happen? You are attempting to capture dreams through linear thought. Nope, this won’t work. You can capture dreams through your intuitive memory. This can be done by mindfully slowing down your pace of awakening. Linger in the hypnagogic state (between sleep and awake state) and you can be in both worlds as you’re asleep enough to tap into dreams and awake enough to retrieve them. What else is important is that you record your dreams, whether they are spontaneous or in response to a question you ask before you go to sleep. Stay open and receptive and your dreams will come through and will be remembered. Author Judith Orloff, M.D. reveals she throws kisses to the moon as its energy is conducive to dreaming. We know the more relaxed you are, the more successful you’ll be.

The following techniques can also aid in remembering your dreams:

  1. Keep a dream journal at your bedside. Select the one you like and make it specifically about dreams.
  2. Write a question about a dilemma that you want an answer to. Ask only one question each night to get an answer.
  3. Set your intention to remember the dream.
  4. In the morning, try to wake up slowly with your eyes closed and keep the feeling behind your eyes and access your intuitive knowing.
  5. Record your dream immediately. It doesn’t matter how clear it is. Record what you remember even if it seems silly or weird. Don’t interpret the dream yet, as this may stop you from remembering.

The above steps will help you uncover emotional blocks and obtain subconscious information about seeing. With some practice, you will see growth happen. Sweet dreams!
