Q: I have benefitted from your writing on mindfulness, and I developed a mindfulness practice. I am searching for simple tools to enhance mindful moments each day. Do you have any suggestions?

A: As I read your question, what struck me was a saying by Dr. Wayne Dyer who was one of my favorite teachers. He said, “Do what you love and love what you do.” Since mindfulness is a way of being, I would look at the simple ways you would like to live – be in each moment of each day. All in all, it’s about choosing to practice the simple things each day.

Some things that I feel work for myself and others are: Greet the day with joy.
Wake up, and say three times, “thank you.” Say, “thanks” each day for the little gifts that show up.

  • Take a mindful meditative walk or just sit in silence for a few moments.
  • If you have a pet, talk to, hug and rub his/her tummy.
  • Smile at someone.
  • Marvel at the beauty you see.
  • See the soul behind someone’s eyes.
  • Spend time in nature alone.
  • Talk to the creatures surrounding you.
  • Go to bed with a “thank you” for the day and what you gave and received.

Congratulations on keeping your practice simple.
