Q: Is there a difference between subconscious and unconscious?
A: These two words are often used interchangeably because there are subtle differences in their meaning. This is similar to the words brain and mind as they are used interchangeably as well. Unconscious can be referred to as passed out, sleeping, even drugged. It can also refer to being unaware, not conscious, or unenlightened.
When you are in a subconscious state, you are actually not sleeping. When you are accessing the subconscious, you are in a relaxed focused concentration state. The subconscious is known to operate 95% of the time. It’s our default mode, and know it or not, you use your subconscious brain all the time. It processes information rapidly, effortlessly and automatically. I use the example of driving from point A to point B. You reach point B and ask, how did I get here? I don’t remember crossing over that bridge. You were on automatic, and your subconscious was doing the driving! That is why hypnosis is so effective because the subconscious mind is accessed and the information that the subconscious mind is receiving, retaining, absorbing and accepting is to help facilitate positive change to occur. The subconscious does include hidden memories, desires and drives.
Research using brain scans show that actual physical brain structures get turned on or off by activating the subconscious. You also witness the wisdom of your subconscious through a memorable dream, or had situations
